Vintage uniform button from the San Francisco Municipal Railway or Muni. Muni currently operates the city's light rail, streetcar and cable car systems. It began in approximately 1912 when the city created a municipal authority to operate the Geary Street Railway, previously operated by the Geary Street, Park and Ocean Railway. The Geary Street Railway formed the first line of what would later come to be known as the SF Municipal Railway.
