In 1987, the U.S. Mint issued the U.S. Constitution Bicentennial Silver Dollar to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. The coin was issued only in 1987, so it has been unavailable for more than 30 years.

It was just the fourth modern commemorative Silver Dollar.

The coin was struck in 90% silver and is the same size and silver weight as a classic Morgan Silver Dollar.

The obverse features a quill pen similar to the one used to draft the Constitution in 1787, as well as a stack of blank paper to represent the idea that the Constitution was an invention of the Founding Fathers and that they started the process from scratch. There was literally no other document like the Constitution in the world, and it has inspired countless other nations to develop their own versions.

Also featured is the phrase “We the people” in the hand-written script that opens the Constitution.

At the bottom of the design are 13 stars to symbolize the 13 states that comprised the United States in 1787 and that worked to draft and ratify the document.

The reverse is a group of Americans from across history to show that the Constitution has endured and that it applies as much today as it did when it was drafted in 1787.

The U.S. Constitution is the founding document that is the supreme law of the United States. George Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The document was completed and signed on September 17, 1787.

In addition to Washington, signers included James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin.

The Constitution needed nine states to approve ratification for it to take effect, and it was first ratified by Delaware on December 7, 1787. New Hampshire was the ninth state to ratify (June 21, 1788), and the Constitution came into effect on March 4, 1789.

The coin is presented in a protective coin capsule and is displayed in a custom box. It is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
