Royal Worcester and the Aesthetic Movement

In the 1860's, after 100 years of isolation the Japanese started to trade with Europe again. Japanese artworks, collected by RW Binns, Royal Worcester managing director, inspired Worcester craftsmen to adapt these Japanese ideas for the British market.

Japanese designs were fashionable with supporters of the Aesthetic movement and their ideas affected even the average household who populated their homes with the symbols of Aestheticism such as Ferns, Japanese Fans, Screens, Feathers, Books and Drawings.
