This is a RARE original piece of art by famed Broadway costume desinger Mabel E. Johnston for a VOGUE "Autumn Issue" magazine cover. (I'm not sure if this actually was a sketch idea for the magazine, and if it was indeed used. Have yet to find more info from Vogue.)

Artist Mabel Emma Johnston graduated with a diploma from the Department of Industrial Art in 1922. Less than a year after her graduation, Johnston got her first job for Broadway designing costumes for the 1923 musical comedy Sun Showers.  Johnston worked fairly steadily on Broadway throughout the 1920s, designing mostly for musical comedies and revues.

The original drawing (pencil, watercolor, pastels) is on paper and measures 20" x 14." And, the original frame measures 21-1/2" x 26".

The Museum of the City of New York own several of her orignal Broadway costume drawings.
