Christopher Marlowe (baptized February 26, 1564 – May 30, 1593) was an English playwright, poet, and student of mathematics, who lived during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Born in Canterbury, Marlowe attended Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and was a contemporary of William Shakespeare. His plays, which include "Doctor Faustus," "Tamburlaine the Great," and "Edward II," were among the most popular of the late sixteenth century. Marlowe's works were characterized by their boldness and their use of blank verse. He was also known for his association with the Earl of Essex and for his involvement in espionage activities. Marlowe's life ended tragically when he was killed in a tavern brawl in Deptford, London, on May 30, 1593. The circumstances surrounding his death remain a subject of debate among scholars, with theories ranging from a drunken fight to a conspiracy involving the government.
