ATERIAN EARLY MAN POINTS. The Aterian industry was a type of stone tool manufacturing developed around the Atlas Region of the Northern Sahara Desert of Africa, today's Morocco & Algeria. It dates back to the Middle Stone Age (Middle Paleolithic) and was a development of the Mousterian culture, a tool technology usually associated with Neanderthals. Tools and weapons of the Aterian culture date back 30,000 - 100,000 years or more, with at least one Aterian site reported at 82,000 years old. Opinions differ, but it is generally accepted that Aterian tool technology was developed and used by early humans known as Archaic Modern Humans, contemporaries of Europe's Neanderthals. Crude stone tools and weapons had been made and used much further back in time, but the Aterian industry was the among the first to develop a stemmed point that could be mounted to a shaft and used as a projectile, as a dart, spear or arrow point. These fascinating ancient tools are quite rare and represent a milestone in early human development

This lot includes (6) points which are 1.5" to 2.5" in length. They are in good condition with some ancient damage and a deep patina that only thousands of years of exposure to the elements can produce. These are great collectible prehistoric artifacts and direct connections to the development of humanity. *The field of Sahara Neolithic Artifacts was expanded by the advent of GPS technology available to meteorite hunters in the Sahara Desert. Thousands of years ago North Africa was a temperate environment similar to our own Great Plains. Countless generations of Stone-Age Man lived, hunted, fought and died there, leaving behind their weapons and tools. Today North Africa consists largely of the Sahara Desert, an inhospitable area almost the size of the United States. Constantly shifting sands and the ability to now safely travel off established trade routes have expanded this fascinating field of study by making these artifacts available to scholars and collectors around the world.
