Size: approx. 12cm high - 8cm rim diameter - 9cm base diameter (nominally 4 3/4" high)
A beautiful Art Deco era Beer Mug designed by renowned New Zealand architect Keith Murray who, when arriving to work at Wedgwood alongside Norman Wilson, came to define a new era in British ceramics.
As one of Murray's most recognisable and enduring shapes, this fabulous Beer Mug (Shape No. 3810) is seen here in the Cream gloss glaze, with a lovely hand engraving depiction of an Elephant head to the front, S.A. map and legend to rear and a very cheeky troop of monkeys climbing up the handle.
As noted above, and shown in detail photo, the base contains a number of interesting marks, including the Sponsorship (presumably of a safari tour or some such) by McClaren Campbell & Co of Johannesburg, reference to the Wedgwood School of Engraving and the relevant park in both English and Afrikaans.
A fantastic and rare item (illustrated in the Perrot's guide for KM) for Deco Wedgwood, Keith Murray completists or Astley Maberly collectors alike!
In excellent clean condition free of any chips, cracks or staining.
There are just a couple of errant faint green under-glaze spots to the base inside & a few very short hard-to-see craze lines to the handle and underside.
