"Lyons' Milk Chocolate Bars"
Shop Delivery / Display Box.
This "Lyons" box would have been used in the local grocers shop to display and dispense 'Milk Chocolate Bars'. This box held 1/2d bars.
Joseph Lyons and Co were best known for their chain of tea shops which were originally opened 1894 and finally closed in 1981, a British company which controlled the largest food empire in the 1930s. Not only did they producing bread, cakes, biscuits chocolate, pies, tea, coffee and ice cream but they also owned tea shops and the famous Corner Houses of London, restaurants and hotels.
The box is made from pine with a label to the front, two sides and interior of the lid.
All of the labels have retained a good depth of colour and they have only minor scuffs and marks, mainly, to the front.
The wood has gained a lovely patina and colour over the years, however, the lid has some faded writing and a repaired split, but it does feel strong and sturdy and it also has the usual marks, stains and scratches you would associate with well used items of this age.
I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.
The lid is held on by its' original wire hinges, but these are replacements.
It measures 22.5 cm (9 inches) long and is 14.5 cm (5 3/4 inches) wide. It is 7.5 cm (3 inches) deep.
This would make a great storage box for any part of the house.
