BACKGROUND

Joseph Anthony Fatone Jr. (born January 28, 1977)[1] is an American singer, dancer, actor, and television host. He is best known as a member of the boy band NSYNC, in which he sings baritone. The band has sold over 70 million records, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.[2] In 2007, he came in second place on the ABC reality show Dancing with the Stars. He was the host of the U.S. and Australian versions of The Singing Bee, which aired on NBC in the United States. Fatone was the announcer for the game show Family Feud from 2010 to 2015. Fatone has hosted on Food Network's Rewrapped, Game Show Network's Common Knowledge, Live Well Network's My Family Recipe Rocks, The Price Is Right Live! at Bally's Las Vegas; and appeared as "Rabbit" on the first season of The Masked Singer in 2019.

Early life and education

Fatone was born in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of Joe and Phyllis Fatone. He has a brother, Steven, and a sister, Janine,[1] and was raised at 2140 84th Street in the Bensonhurst neighborhood.[3] His father had sung in a doo-wop group called the Orions.[3] At 13, he moved with his family to Orlando, Florida, where he attended Dr. Phillips High School.[4]

Career

NSYNC

After high school, Fatone played "Wolfie" in Beetlejuice's Rock and Roll Graveyard Revue at Universal Studios in Orlando.[5] There, in the summer of 1995, he befriended fellow park performer Chris Kirkpatrick who recruited him as the fourth member of a new vocal group that included Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez. They were later joined by Lance Bass and the band NSYNC was formed. Fatone sang baritone with the band from their formation to 2002, when they went on an indefinite hiatus, during which time they sold more than seventy million records worldwide. He performed lead vocals on the single "Together Again" and the No Strings Attached album track "I Thought She Knew". While a member of NSYNC, Fatone co-starred with bandmate Bass in the 2001 romantic comedy film On the Line and guest-starred with the band on The Simpsons episode, New Kids on the Blecch.

On August 25, 2013, NSYNC regrouped for a one-off performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.[6] They performed a medley of "Girlfriend" and "Bye Bye Bye"; after the performance Lance Bass said that the group had no plans for a reunion tour or new music.[7] In April 2019 the band reunited without Timberlake for a one-off performance with Ariana Grande at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. NSYNC have long been subject to speculation of a reunion, to which Fatone has given the answer: "Never say never".[8]

On September 12, 2023, following weeks of teasers and speculation[9] regarding a potential reunion, all five members appeared together at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards to present the Best Pop Award.[10] On September 14, it was confirmed the group recorded a new song entitled "Better Place" for the DreamWorks Animation film Trolls Band Together.[11] The song was released on September 29, 2023, reaching No. 1 on the US and Canadian iTunes Charts, No. 4 on the Global and European iTunes Charts and No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In the wake of the new single's release, Fatone said there were no immediate plans for more music from NSYNC, but the band could release a new album within the next two years, subject to the success of "Better Place" and the involvement of Timberlake.[12]

Acting

In 2002 Fatone played Cousin Angelo in the comedy film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a role he reprised in the TV spin-off My Big Fat Greek Life and the 2016 sequel. In the same year he made his Broadway debut, playing the lead in Rent at the Nederlander Theatre in New York.[13][14] He went on to act in the critically acclaimed movie The Cooler and had minor roles in the experimental film Red Riding Hood and Homie Spumoni, the latter alongside Jamie-Lynn Sigler. He returned to Broadway in 2004 in a revival of Little Shop Of Horrors[15] and later appeared in productions of The Producers and 42nd Street in Pittsburgh[16] and Rock of Ages at Bally's Las Vegas.

Fatone played himself in the kung fu skit "Enter the Fat One" in the first season of Robot Chicken, later making more appearances on the show including the first Star Wars episode. He also played himself in the Syfy film Jersey Shore Shark Attack, the TV series Return of the Mac and the Comedy Central feature Cursed Friends. Fatone has guest-starred in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, Imagination Movers and Kim Possible in addition to various other TV shows and horror films, including Inkubus (2011) and Dead 7 (2016).

Presenting

Fatone was the "ringmaster" for NBC's reality series Celebrity Circus in 2005. In 2007 he hosted NBC's The Singing Bee and the Australian version of the show on Nine Network. The same year he became a red carpet host for TV Guide along with Lisa Rinna. In 2009 Fatone co-hosted the live pre-show for TNA Wrestling's biggest annual pay-per-view event, TNA Bound for Glory, alongside Jeremy Borash.[17]

From 2010 to 2015, Fatone served as the announcer for host Steve Harvey on the show Family Feud. In which time he hosted the Live Well Network series My Family Recipe Rocks, the Food Network cooking competition Rewrapped, the series Parents Just Don't Understand on the Hub Network[18] and was a celebrity guest host of The Price Is Right Live! at Bally's Las Vegas. In January 2012, Fatone was one of eight celebrities participating in the Food Network reality series Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off.[19] Though eliminated in week six, he secured a $5,000 award for his charity, the Fatone Family Foundation.[20]

In February 2014 Fatone made an appearance on the hidden camera show Impractical Jokers, standing in for show regular Brian Quinn, during a challenge. He made repeat appearances on the show as host or featured guest in a number of specials, including a 2017 episode based at his Orlando hot dog restaurant, Fat One's. Fatone is the permanent host of the spin-off series Impractical Jokers: After Party and he made a cameo in Impractical Jokers: The Movie in 2020.

Fatone portrayed "Rabbit" on season one of the singing competition show The Masked Singer, tying with Rumer Willis as "Lion" for fourth place overall.[21] Currently he is presenter of the game show Common Knowledge, which premiered on January 14, 2019, on the Game Show Network.[22] In 2021 he served as a panelist on the Irish talent show Last Singer Standing.

Dancing with the Stars

On February 1, 2007, the ABC television network announced that Fatone would participate in season 4 of the American version of Dancing with the Stars, which debuted March 19, 2007. He ended up placing second, losing the mirror ball to Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough.[23] He competed with professional partner Kym Johnson. Fatone participated in the 15th season of Dancing with the Stars for a second chance to win a mirror ball trophy,[24] again dancing with Kym Johnson. They were the second couple eliminated. He later returned in season 27 during Trio Week as a trio partner to John Schneider and Emma Slater.

In February 2013, Fatone appeared on Holland America Line's "Dancing with the Stars at Sea", aboard the MS Eurodam. He returned to Dancing with the Stars at Sea on Holland America Line's MS Nieuw Amsterdam in January 2014.[25] He was paired with Lacey Schwimmer and appeared alongside Mark Ballas, Sabrina Bryan, and a dance ensemble. Unlike the TV show, this was not a competition and there were no eliminations.

Personal life

Fatone met his wife, Kelly Baldwin, while they were still in high school in 1993. After joining NSYNC two years later, their relationship was off-and-on.

Career

Acting

At age 21, Rinna appeared in the music video for John Parr's single "Naughty Naughty," as the passenger in Parr's car. Rinna later made her television debut appearing as the girlfriend of Jason Bateman's character in several episodes of The Hogan Family in 1990. In 1992, she first received national recognition when she originated the character of Billie Reed on NBC's Days of Our Lives. Her character was an instant hit with viewers, earning Rinna two consecutive Soap Opera Digest Awards. She departed in 1995, but went on to reprise the role in 2002, 2012, and 2018. She then made the jump to primetime television, portraying Taylor McBride on Aaron Spelling's Melrose Place from 1996 to 1998. Through the late 1990s, Rinna appeared in a series of television films, including Lifetime's Sex, Lies & Obsession opposite her husband Harry Hamlin, based on Hamlin's true battles with sex addiction and alcoholism. Her previous Lifetime film, Another Woman's Husband, boasted one of the highest ratings for a movie on Lifetime since 1999.[10] In 2001, Rinna played the role of Veronica Simpson in the comedy film Good Advice, which starred Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards. Over the summer of 2007, Rinna starred as Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago alongside her husband, who played the role of Billy Flynn.[11]

In 2004, Rinna guest-starred on the ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules and the CW drama Veronica Mars, playing the recurring role of Lynn Echolls on the latter. Rinna was the host of Soap Talk (2002-2006), the flagship daily lifestyle show of cable network Soapnet. She and co-host Ty Treadway received four consecutive Daytime Emmy Award nominations for their work.[13] At the same time, Rinna hosted three seasons of Lifetime's TV home makeover program Merge. In 2007, she also hosted Oxygen's Tease, a reality competition series for hairstylists. From 2007 to 2009, she was the host of TV Guide Network's awards season red carpet coverage, replacing Joan Rivers. In 2006, Rinna competed in the second season of Dancing with the Stars with professional dancer Louis van Amstel. She was eliminated in round seven based on audience voting, despite having higher marks from the judges than fellow celebrity dancer Jerry Rice.[14] She was a regular guest co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly.

In 2008, TV Guide reported that Rinna and Hamlin had signed a deal to create a reality television series based on their family life.[15] The series, titled Harry Loves Lisa, premiered on TV Land on October 6, 2010, and ran for 6 episodes. In 2010, she was also featured as a guest judge on the fourth episode of the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race. In 2011, Rinna competed in season 4 of The Celebrity Apprentice. She was eliminated after being the project manager on the second task, writing and performing a children's book. Rinna returned to the show in its sixth season as one of the "All-Stars" contestants. After being eliminated from that roster, she appeared on the May 13, 2013, episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with Lil Jon to discuss their time on the show. In 2014, she appeared as one of the contestants on ABC's game show Sing Your Face Off.

In 2014, Rinna joined the main cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for the show's fifth season.[16] She acknowledged in a 2019 Los Angeles Times interview that being a Housewife brought her unprecedented attention: "I've never been more famous than I am at this point, because of the show."[9] Rinna, along with singer-songwriter Kandi Burruss of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, was among the franchise's first celebrity hires. She is widely considered one of the best Housewives of all time.[17][18] In 2020, she was nominated as Favorite Reality Star at the People's Choice Awards. On January 6, 2023, Rinna announced her departure after eight seasons.[19]

Modeling

In 1998, Rinna, while six months pregnant with Delilah Belle Hamlin, the first of Harry Hamlin's and her two daughters, posed for a nude pictorial ("Melrose Mom," its title, paid tribute to her role in Melrose Place) and cover shoot for the September issue of Playboy magazine. She later recounted the instructions given to her by Playboy photographer Deborah Anderson: "'I do not want you long and sinewy and angular and muscular. I want you soft...' This was really hard for me because being 35 years old and posing for Playboy, you want to amp it up."[20] In May 2009, she posed again for Playboy and, this time, was also its cover model.[21][22]

She has also graced the covers of CVLUX, Living Well, Soap Opera Magazine and Soap Opera Digest.[23][24] Rinna has appeared in commercials and print ads throughout her career. In 2008, she appeared in print ads for Mars Inc's M&M candies with Joey Fatone as part of the "There's an M&M in everyone" advertising campaign.[25] In 2012, Rinna appeared in an infomercial for abdominal muscle toner "The Flex Belt" alongside Adrianne Curry, Denise Richards and Janet Evans. She has appeared in a television commercial for Taco Bell and an infomercial for Winsor Pilates.[25] In 2012 to benefit the charity Dress for Success, she modeled an adult incontinence brief made by Depend under a tight-fitting evening gown.[26] She appeared in print ads and commercials for Depend and,[27] according to reports, Depend paid her $2 million to be their celebrity spokesperson.[28] In September 2019, she walked the runway for Kyle Richards' and Shahida Clayton's new women's clothing brand at New York Fashion Week.[29]

In 2008, she released a series of workout videos called Dance Body Beautiful.[30][31]

Fashion

Rinna and her husband Harry Hamlin jointly owned the Belle Gray clothing boutique in Sherman Oaks, California in 2011.[32] They closed the store in 2012 because, by then, both had grown too busy with their respective acting careers to manage it.[33] In June 2019, Rinna launched an activewear collaboration with retailer Goldsheep.[34] Proceeds from the collaboration benefited The Trevor Project, a national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide-prevention services to LGBTQ youth.[34]

QVC

In April 2012, Rinna brought her collection to QVC as the Lisa Rinna Collection, which has been a success.[35]

Cosmetics

In September 2020, Rinna announced that she will be launching Rinna Beauty,[36] with its lip kits named Birthday Suit, Legends Only, and No Apologies.

Beverages

In August 2022, Rinna announced on an episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills she is in the process of entering the alcoholic beverage industry with a product called Rinna Rosé.[37]

In popular culture

Rinna's staple bangs-and-back hairstyle and her cosmetically enhanced lips have long made her an easily recognizable figure in popular culture, and she has played parody versions of herself on series such as The Prince, The Shrink Next Door, and The Great North. A running joke in the public sphere surrounding Rinna, sometimes dubbed the "QVC queen," is her willingness to try anything and everything to put her name out there to 'secure a check', one popular one being the front-woman for adult diaper brand Depends.[38] In 2022, a promotional image of Rinna as an M&M on the red carpet of The Academy Awards, from her TV Guide awards show hosting tenure fifteen years prior, went viral. The 'Lisa Rinna M&M' became an instant meme of Twitter and TikTok, usually accompanied by the K-pop song "After Like" by Ive.

Her 2014 hiring on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is credited with 'saving' the series midway through its run, delivering a substantial boost in ratings.[38] Her hyperbolic communication style on the series has garnered extensive attention on social media, and she is credited with delivering some of the show's most iconic scenes. Rinna's dramatic response to costar Kim Richards threatening to expose information about her husband is considered a defining moment of the entire franchise, being parodied on programs such as RuPaul's Drag Race. Other notable moments include her teary-eyed reaction to Richards' bunny gift return at the 2017 reunion and her nonchalant questioning of co-star Dorit Kemsley's drug use at a dinner in Hong Kong. In 2020, a Buzzfeed profile on Rinna observed: "She’s created her own brand of iconic absurdity with her self-help catchphrases (“Own it, baby!!”), tearful controversies about stuffed rabbits, and one of the most aggressive glass-breaking scenes in Housewives history (a tall order in the franchise)."

Personal life

Rinna married actor Harry Hamlin on March 29, 1997, in Beverly Hills, California.[39] The couple have two daughters, Delilah Belle (born June 10, 1998) and Amelia Gray (born June 13, 2001).[40][41] Rinna is also stepmother to Hamlin's son Dimitri Alexander from his relationship with Ursula Andress.

She has acknowledged having plastic surgery and having silicone, Botox and Juvéderm injections. Although she remains fond of Botox, she has said that using Juvéderm was a mistake.[42]

On November 15, 2021, Rinna announced that her mother Lois, who was featured in The Real Housewives franchise, died of a stroke.[43] Rinna's mother, Lois, had survived being attacked by the Trailside serial killer, David Carpenter in 1960, three years before Lisa was born.[44]
