ONE OF THE VERY BEST LATE 18TH CENTURY WROUGHT IRON CURLED DECORATED WROUGHT IRON ROASTING FORKS WE HAVE HAD IN A FEW YEARS.
A FANTASTIC CURL DECORATED WROUGHT IRON AMERICAN THREE TINE ROASTING FORK IN A LARGE SIZE WITH A PIG TAIL HANDLE, A TRIPLE TWIST DECORATED SHAFT AND 48 CURLED DECORATIONS ALL IN AN OLD GRUNGY SURFACE WITH TRACES OF AN OLD BLACK SURFACE.
PROBABLY NEW ENGLAND, CIRCA 1760-1800.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST DECORATION CONSISTING OF 12 SETS OF 4 CURLED DECORATED MOTIFS.
This piece was the blacksmith's crowning achievement.
Great hand forging marks throughout.
I have seen and owned other decorated roasting forks in the past. Although they exhibit subtle differences I believe they are all from the same area in New England. I have had some with very elaborate decorated designs, some with hearts others with just curls but THIS ONE IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST.
Most of the DECORATED iron tools and utensils were usually made for a young women's dowry. This fact is discussed in George Neumann's book, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" as well as in "Wrought Iron in Winterthur". Often the bride would have these items made for either her dowry or as wedding presents. They were primarily made for show purposes much as the decorated show towels and linens.
This great FORK is in GREAT condition, it does not have any repairs, restorations or additions.
