The US 506th Parachute Regiment departed from Upottery airbase in Devon, England and dropped over the Normandy region of France in the early hours of 6th June 1944. The 506th was an airborne light infantry regiment who earned the name “Currahees” an Indian word meaning “I stand alone”. The role of the air borne infantry is brought to life in the HB series “Band of Brothers”.
