The vehicle was created and driven by Thrasher, one of the newer members of the Dreadnoks. The fiction describes it as cobbled together from parts salvaged from several different vehicles, including a 1980s model Pontiac Trans-Am, a dune buggy, a pickup truck and various others. The Thunder Machine is propelled by a jet engine similar to jet-propelled dragsters. This made it fast but hard to maneuver. The vehicle was built on a military truck chassis, similar to a Humvee. It had armor plating riveted over most of the exterior surface. The armor is believed to be from old tanks, and according to Thrasher, the Thunder Machine is capable of taking as much, if not, more damage than a Cobra H.I.S.S tank. The front tires were racing tires, adding some maneuverability. Since an engine wasn't required, the front of the truck was replaced with the nose of a 1970s era Pontiac Trans Am on top of which was mounted a roll cage and two huge armor-piercing Gatling guns.

Thrasher was spoiled rotten as a child by his nice middle class parents in their nice middle class neighborhood. He was never disciplined, since
his parents believed this would "stifle energies he might need
later in life." Thrasher was never denied anything he asked for,
even though everything he asked for wound up causing some type of
unexplainable destruction or minor disaster. He got everything he
wanted . . . but that wasn't enough! At a tender young
age, this "wild child" wandered into the swamps where he
could do what he pleased. It was in the swamps where he met up with
Zartan and the Dreadnoks and was welcomed into the fold . . .
"Even by Dreadnok standards, this guy is pretty low. He
derives a slight sensation, which almost registers as pleasure on his
primitive central nervous system, from inflicting misery onto
others."
The disaster-in-waiting that would become Thrasher grew up in a middle-class neighborhood, raised by middle-class parents who felt that discipline of any sort would 'stifle energies he might need later in life'. He wanted for nothing, though everything his parents gave him wound up causing trouble. After his parents were crippled in an accident that may or may not have had anything to do with his repair work on their brakes, this wild child disappeared into the swamps, where he could truly do anything he wished... which mostly involved his strangling anything that crossed his path.
Of course, other nefarious sorts with his mindset liked to occupy swamps as well, and this was how Thrasher wound up meeting the Dreadnoks, who (after seeing that he'd be a perfect match for their group) welcomed him in with open arms. Soon after, they put this mechanical genius to work. However, Zartan quickly tired of his antics, and left him to his own devices for a short while, during which time he and his minions hooked up with Cobra, doing nefarious deeds for this group of would-be world conquerors. Eventually, though, Thrasher ran out of things to kill, and came looking for the Dreadnoks.
Of course, he instead found Zandar and Zarana, since the head Dreadnok was currently being held captive by the GI Joe team. When these three were eventually joined by both Storm Shadow and the other Dreadnoks, Thrasher and company mounted a daring rescue attempt, using some of his newest creations. These included the Swampfire, a rebuilt Cobra helicopter, and arguably his greatest creation - the Thunder Machine. This thing, built from the carcasses of several other Cobra vehicles (and at least one sports car) is armed with twin Vulcan cannons on the front, as well as a rocket thruster for excess velocity. After these thugs managed to actually liberate their leader, they returned to Cobra Island just in time to witness Serpentor's ascendance to power within Cobra, and wound up doing all kinds of dirty work for this genetic amalgamation of the earth's greatest military minds.
Not that they were picky, of course. The Dreadnoks continued to serve Cobra even after Cobra Commander (or someone claiming to be him, at any rate) got Serpentor out of the way - they even hung around after this new Commander and Doctor Mindbender arranged an 'accident' for Zartan. Zartan took off shortly after this, you see, leaving Zarana to run the Dreadnoks for a time. This arrangement worked out well, and she split the Dreadnoks into two groups for a time, one led by her and the other led by Zandar; this latter group was the one that Thrasher was a part of. The Dreadnoks eventually left Cobra's service, however, and reunited once Zartan himself returned to the fold. Still with the group at this time, Thrasher was around to witness Zartan's successful efforts to transform the Dreadnoks into a nation-wide crime syndicate the likes of which have never been seen before.
Not that Zartan himself was around much longer after this, for he'd apparently succumbed to a severe light-sensitivity brought on by his chameleon-like abilities. This is when his daughter, Zanya, stepped in to take over the day-to-day operations of the group - not that Thrasher minded, really. As long as he got to build more ingenious weapons to destroy things, he was happy. That's why he didn't complain too much when Zartan agreed to help the original Cobra Commander to rebuild his organization - this just meant that he'd have all kinds of new toys - U.S. Army toys - to wreck!
Though the Commander's plot ultimately went awry, the Dreadnoks still work for Cobra on a contract basis, performing various tasks for the group as is needed. Thrasher continues on with the Dreadnoks to this very day, helping them to do various nefarious deeds for either Cobra or Zartan himself!
CREW MEMBERS 2001 ZARTAN & LANARD
Zartan
was released as part of the seventeenth series (2001), carded in a
two-pack with Shadow Viper. Near mint, he
has tight joints, New O-ring and no
screw rust. He comes with a black handgun, a silver sword and the figure stand pictured is
included. The 1991 IMPEL card #175 is near mint and great for display.
LANARD; He has tight joints, some paint wear and paint rubs, New O-ring and no screw rust. He comes with a black handgun and the figure stand pictured is included.
Zartan's
early military career has been traced back to the Saint-Cyr Academy,
where the misguided youth quickly proved himself to be a traitor,
turning his regiment into a band of mercenaries and selling secrets
to opposing forces. Although he was charged with treason and sent to
prison, his talent for impersonation got him out the door, along with
the dirty laundry. After escaping incarceration, he traveled to the
Orient and became an apprentice to a Ninja master. Skilled in archery
and the use of edged weaponry, his reputation led him to an encounter
with an organization known as COBRA Command. His unequaled prowess as
a quick-change artist made it easy for him to infiltrate and spy on
G.I. Joe Headquarters. A master of make-up and disguise, a
ventriloquist, a linguist (he speaks over 20 languages and dialects),
an acrobatic-contortionist and practitioner of several martial arts
forms, he's been known to use holographic implants to alter his
appearance instantaneously. He can look like a punk rocker one minute
and an elderly gentleman the next. Many have been fooled
by how seemingly easy it is to capture him...the trick is keeping
him, because Zartan does the most damage from the
inside!
Psychological Profile: Extremely paranoid. Experiences
multiple personality disorder to such an extent that his original
personality has been buried and forgotten.
