Very rare, large majolica ceramic plate, made and signed on the back by the Icaro Rodi factory in the 1930s, first brand, decorations made entirely by hand with enamels in relief vitrified.
Useful information for the evaluation of the object:
The plate belong to the first and most valuable productions of the factory, when some of the most important artists of the German Vietri period collaborated with it, having withdrawn from Italy due to the war. The plate belong to this period, which was very short, which is why they are particularly rare and valuable, marked with the first mark. In the last photos under this description we have placed a sculpture priced at €600-700 to give an idea of the value of the manufacturing, unfortunately we were unable to find other objects more similar to ours with the same brand, the only ones found are those marked Rhodes, belonging to the subsequent production of the manufacturer, much more common and of lower value than ours.
Final thoughts on the object:
The plate is decorated in İznik style, the decorative style for which this manufacture is best known, which takes its name from the city of the same name, located west of Anatolia, where it was manufactured a ceramic of great value which was initially produced between late 15th and 17th centuries. The originality of the potters was such that their use of original Chinese designs from which they were inspired, has been described as adaptation rather than imitation, and they are now known and admired throughout the world.
Information on artist and/or manufacturer:
The Icaro artistic ceramic factory was active in Rhodes (Greece) during the Italian occupation. Founded in 1929 by some potters from Faenza, it produces ceramics for furnishings with oriental decorations, often inspired by Iznik motifs, as well as deco-inspired artefacts. Among the collaborators of the factory, active until 1944, we remember the Austrian Gunther Studemann, Sophia Van Stolk and the Austrian painter Hegor Huber. In the photo immediately below this description we have put additional historical information for those who want to learn more, with some of the brands used including ours.
