MANY FASCINATING PLATES -

BAKER (Ray Stannard Baker, AMerican journalist and writer, 1870-1946).

The boy's book on inventions : stories of the wonders of modern science.

(London): Harper & Brothers, 1902. Fourth edition. xv, 1-354, [1] pp. Decorative cloth binding. Size: 8vo (20.8cm x 15cm).

Good condition. A pleasing copy despite the following comments. Recased, retaining cloth to spine. Light marking and fading to front cover. Spine rather darkened and with repaired split to cloth covering. Top of rear board alongside spine with pale stain, as well as top of text block, but pages unaffected. New endpapers. Tissue guard foxed between title and frontis. Pages and plates generally bright and clean, with just a hint of age-toning to leaves. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.

As the title suggsets, in this book for boys, Baker describes a number on innovations that were cutting edge in their day but of course now are taken for granted. The author's enthusiasm is brimming out of the pages, and the numerous well-conceived plates add to the sense of scientific adventure that he creates.
