Robert Craufurd was born in Ayrshire, the third son of Sir Alexander Craufurd. After a military career that took him from India to the Netherlands, he took command of the Light Division composed of the elite foot soldiers of Wellingtons army. He was a very strict disciplinarian and prone to violent mood swings, with his soldiers nicknamed him Black Bob. Craufurd was wounded storming the breach in the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo in 1812 and died four days later.
