"A decent piece of work that describes siege warfare. It is well focused and does not divert from its subject.
It provides a good overview of machinery, siege techniques ranging from mines, starvation, treachery, etc.
It may sound a bit dry but with such a limited amount of page, the author cannot really make it the most exiting read.
One thing I found annoying, was the combo statement/example that the author use quite regularly to illustrate his points. The author tends to give a historical example for each of his concept. This could be fine for the layman, to make the read a bit more lively etc. but sometimes the examples are a bit out of place and seem to come from nowhere. It references such and such king who besieged one fortress, etc at a given location, etc. but it is so out of context that it sounds artificial.
Overall a serious piece of work quickly read but that can serve a a reference for your future readings.
The plates and explanations are superb."

" My 11yo son has become fascinated by siegecraft and strategy after reading the Ranger's Apprentice series.
He rates this book highly (and has been very unhappy with some other books we have found on the subject, so it's a fair appraisal.)
What he looks for is a better understanding of how a siege was conducted, with discussion of concepts and decision-making, rather than just descriptions or cartoon-y "this part of the fort was called the..." stuff. He also doesn't really like graphic descriptions of battle (as historical accounts often give) - he is looking for Strategy.
If that is what you want, you will be pleased.
