1984 Press Photo Darling Legitimus & Garry Cadenant in "Sugar Cane Alley" Movie

This is an original press photo. Sugar Cane Alley, now on view at the Greenway III, tells a simple story: in Martinique during the early 1930s, a bright 11-year-old boy (Garry Cadenat) is encouraged by his feisty grandmother (Darling Legitimus) to ensure a better future for himself by winning a scholarship. Sounds like it might be corny and dull, doesn't it? But this marvelous drama is much more than the sum of its parts. Through some wonderful alchemy of storytelling skill, director-scriptwriter Euzhan Paley elevates observations and anecdotes to the level of art.
