THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
The painted cast iron Toonerville Trolley with nickel wheels was made by Dent Hardware in the mid 1920s under license of the Geo. Borgfeldt Co. It was branded with the NIFTY trademark indicating it was considered by Borgfeldt to be a top of the line quality toy. This example is considered a second casting in that it was assembled & painted sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s using original factory parts from the 1920s. The parts, original boxes & sample tags were found when the factory in Fullerton, PA was closed & the inventory liquidated in the 1960s. The cast iron Trolley is 4 1/2" long & 6" to the top of the electric take up wire. The Trolley is painted a traditional green with red & orange trim. As this was never played with it is in like new condition in a near mint original box & it has one of the very few sample tags. The box is copyright Fontaine Fox. To sum up, the toy was assembled from original parts cast nearly 100 years ago & was professionally painted using the original factory paint colors about 50 years ago. The original box & the sample tag are also nearly 100 years old. I purchased the cast iron Trolley from the estate of a collector who purchased it in 1976 from the dealer who had bought out the factory contents. The collector paid $178 in 1976 for this example & at the same time purchased the red version also with sample tag. I am selling the green lead, slush model Toonerville Trolley along with the green cast iron toy. I believe that Dent made the lead slush model first under license of the Geo. Borgfeldt company & then followed up with the cast iron model a few years later. The lead slush model is copyright dated 1923 F. Fox. It is primarely green with gold highlights, red wheels & some red trim & black chimney stack. Condition is excllent with great paint & no damage. It is my opinion as an expert in comic character toys with nearly 50 years experience buying/selling/collecting & writing about these toys that Dent made the slush lead TT in 1923 & followed upwith the cast iron toy the same or next year. Borgfeldt also commisioned the tin TT to be made in Germany by H. Fischer at about the same time or possibly earlier. Borgfeldt also licensed the TT characters to be made in bisque in Japan in the late 1920s or early 1930s & the glass candy container which was made in 1924 in the US. 122523/22CGE+EE(1)
