THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF IRON HAS BEEN IN A COLLECTION HERE IN CONNECTICUT FOR OVER 60 YEARS.

A FANTASTIC EARLY 18TH CENTURY AMERICAN STATIONARY WROUGHT IRON "BAR STYLE" BROILER OR GRIDIRON WITH A VERY FINE FLATTENED OVER-SIZED HANDLE WITH A GREAT INVERTED OPEN HEART SHAPED HANDLE ALL IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION AND IN WONDERFUL OLD UNTOUCHED SURFACE WITH NICE OLD COLOR AND PATINA.
PROBABLY NEW ENGLAND, CIRCA 1760-1790.

THE PAN IS A SIMPLE SEVEN BAR DESIGN BUT
THE HANDLE IS REMARKABLE.
THE HANDLE IS A CONTINUATION OF THE CENTER BAR AND HAS A WONDERFUL DECORATIVE ADDITION WHERE IT ENTERS THE PAN. THE HANDLE ITSELF IS FLAT HAMMERED WITH A WONDERFUL INVERTED OPEN HEART ON THE TOP.

THE FRONT PEG LEGS ARE ARE CONTINUATIONS OF THE RAILS AND ALL THE FEET ARE STILL INTACT.

A gridiron or stationary broiler was a portable gate to lay meat or fish on for broiling, or at times could serve as a trivet.

The surface is of great old quality and patina.
Great hand wrought tool marks throughout.

The condition is near perfect.
Only the typical heat wear you would expect.

This is a very important piece of American Iron.

Highly decorated broilers are EXTREMELY RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER.

Most of the HEART AND CURL DECORATED iron tools and utensils were usually made for a young women's dowry. This fact is discussed in George Neumann's book, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" as well as in "Wrought Iron in Winterthur". Often the bride would have these items made for either her dowry or were given to her as wedding presents.

It is 24" long with the handle, the pan is about 10" wide and 11 1/2" deep and it stands over 2 3/4" tall.

The condition is near perfect and there are NO repairs or restorations.

Typical wear and imperfections associated with age and use.
