“The French system of conscription brings together a fair sample of all classes; ours is composed of the scum of the earth—the mere scum of the earth. It is only wonderful that we should be able to make so much out of them afterwards” –

Notes of conversations with the Duke of Wellington, Philip Henry, 5th Earl Stanhope

1815, Scum of the Earth is an asymmetric, competitive, tactical card game. It is the third game in the critically acclaimed Historic Epic Battle System, and successor to the award-winning games 1066, Tears to Many Mothers and 1565, St. Elmo’s Pay.

Deeply thematic, but richly and lovingly researched, 1815, Scum of the Earth presents the Battle of Waterloo as you’ve never seen it before.

Since we hit £90,261, peeps we’ll have some special guests from Kilforth join us in the game too...

For the first time, you will now be able to play the Historic Epic Battle System (HEBS) with up to 4 players providing you have more than one base set!

There are normally only two leaders in each HEBS game, but the additional two bonus leaders included with every copy of 1815, Scum of the Earth – Prussian Field Marshal Blücher and French Marshal Ney – allow you to play with 3-4 players when using two core games.

With two core games you will battle over 6 Frontiers, side by side with an ally – you can pass troops to each other via your Reserves, as well as being able to target either of your foes with events and abilities.

You can also play multiplayer by using and/or mixing 1815, Scum of the Earth with other previous HEBS games too. So if you want to, for example, pit Napoleon’s armies of 1815, Scum of the Earth against the Ottomans of 1565, St. Elmo’s Pay, now’s your chance!

In 1815, Scum of the Earth, each player, as either the Duke of Wellington or Napoleon (and/or Blücher and Michel Ney), musters troops and resources to overcome the various obstacles in their path before their armies clash in an epic battle over three farms forward of the ridge at Waterloo: Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte, and Papelotte.

Every arresting card in the game is inspired by a real person or event from the time. With a focus on quick, tactical play, and a thematic re-imagining of the events of the time, the game is non-collectable, and there is no deck building required. Each player simply grabs their deck and shuffles, then play begins.

Relive the bloody Battle of Waterloo and the tumultuous events leading up to it, and stamp your mark on the history of the world...

From the team behind the lauded Kilforth series of Fantasy Quest Games, Shadows of Kilforth and Gloom of Kilforth (Tabletop Gaming Magazine’s Game of the Year Award winner) and 1066, Tears to Many Mothers (the beautiful game that launched the Historic Epic Battle System), 1815, Scum of the Earth is the ultimate card game of war and history.

In 1815, Scum of the Earth both players race against each other to overcome a series of asymmetrical historical objectives that the British Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley and the Emperor of the French, Napoleon Bonaparte had to overcome in order to battle each other at Waterloo. Returning from exile after his defeat at Leipzig, Napoleon is set to take on Europe yet again, and the fate of the world is in your hands!

1815, Scum of the Earth is an asymmetric, competitive tactical card game in the style of Magic the Gathering but non-collectable. The complete game is in the box. Striking artwork complements sumptuous production values. All character names are taken directly from history.

As with all of our games 1815, Scum of the Earth is Solo Friendly. The game and all the cards contained in it are fully playable solo, and an ,AI, Foe with varying levels of difficulty for the enemy player has been developed in partnership with an expert team of solo players from the One Player Guild on boardgamegeek led by the great Paul Ibbs. Some cards even have solo specific effects too!

The Solo rules can be found here.

Solo Against Multiple Foes?!

Feeling particularly tough? Want to take on two Foes at once? With two core sets you can now play solo against two Foes simultaneously, each of varying difficulty if you so choose! Find out what it was like for Napoleon to take on the cunning of Wellington and Blücher at the same time. Or reverse the situation and play as Marshal Ney and Napoleon against only Wellington, for example.

UPDATE: We’ve also cleaned up the setup for solo play so you can now speed through the early game by getting to the cards your Foe can play much more quickly.

The first game in the series, 1066, Tears to Many Mothers won Game of the Year and Best Art awards and was a runner up in the Golden Geek and Origins Awards for ,Best Historical Board Game,. 1565, St. Elmo’s Pay won the Dice Tower Seal of Approval as well as Tabletop Gaming Magazine’s Must Play award.

1815, Scum of the Earth honours this heady legacy whilst breathing new life into the system with all new and original art, all new characters, all new units, all new historical stories, and featuring brand new card abilities too...

  •  3-4 Players (with 2 sets): Channel soldiers into your ally’s battlefield
  •  Revamped Solo Play: Cleaner setup + battle multiple Foes!
  •  HEBS Weather Deck Expansion: Battlefield conditions that affect both sides!
  •  Squares, Lines, Columns: Historical formations for troops!
  •  Napoleon’s Grand Battery: Invincible French cannons!
  •  Ridge Defenders: Educe Wellington’s tactics to save your soldiers!
  •  Mired: Soak your enemies in mud and rain!
  •  Duelling: Target specific units to grind your foes to dust!

  •  and many more!

To combine with other existing (and future) games in the HEBS series, such as 1066, Tears to Many Mothers and 1565, St. Elmo’s Pay each player simply chooses a faction from any box to play as. So the Knights of Malta from 1565 could battle the Saxons from 1066, or even the French from 1815!

In 1815, Scum of the Earth, each round players take turns to play cards and build their armies. Play units, characters, tactics, attachments, and events, all based on the real figures, weapons, and occurrences that resulted in Napoleon’s downfall.

Whilst racing each other to deploy the best army, players must also defeat a variety of historical obstacles that their respective leaders had to conquer on their way to Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo. Master Napoleon’s bloodless revolution in Paris; experience Old Nosey’s (Wellington’s) marshaling of the Allied forces; not to mention Wellington’s partaking in the Duchess of Richmond’s glamorous ball in Brussels on the night before the bloodbath of Waterloo commenced. Many of the beautifully dressed officers lay dead in their dancing shoes within 24 hours...

The Battle of Waterloo is initially fought over three Frontiers of troops (just as the real battle was), represented by three Frontier cards: Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte, and Papelotte. Players compete for these cards by inflicting damage on them. Careful hand, resource, and tableau management is required for victory, and the first player to claim two Frontiers wins the game!

1815, Scum of the Earth is an asymmetric, competitive, tactical card game, and successor to the award-winning 1066, Tears to Many Mothers (and 1565, St. Elmo’s Pay), with which it is fully compatible. Each player, as either the Duke of Wellington or Napoleon, musters troops and resources to overcome the various obstacles in their path before their armies clash in an epic battle over three farms forward of the ridge at Waterloo: Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte, and Papelotte.

Every beautiful card in the game is inspired by a real person or event from the time. Each player simply grabs their deck and shuffles, then play begins.

Note on title: Though not an accurate description of their formidable fighting prowess, Wellington himself referred to his men on more than one occasion as Scum of the Earth. “The French system of conscription brings together a fair sample of all classes; ours is composed of the scum of the earth—the mere scum of the earth. It is only wonderful that we should be able to make so much out of them afterwards.” – ‘Notes of conversations with the Duke of Wellington, 1831-1851’ by Philip Henry, 5th Earl Stanhope
