The Coldstream Guards fought at Hougomont Farm and soldiers from the regiment forced closed the gates in the face of the French attack.

The farmhouse in the Wallon region of Belgium was in the centre of the Battle of Waterloo. In the first hours of the battle, the French attacked the extreme right of the Allied forces through the Hougoumont woods. They tried to create a diversion to force Wellington to clear his centre.

Napoleon did not know that the Allied force had transformed the farmhouse into a bastion. French soldiers broke into the courtyard through the gates, but were shot and bayoneted by Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards who closed the gates. The British soldiers held the farmhouse.
