Thanks, AI description!

My own detail: I am a hat collector who lived in London during my high school years in the 1960s.  I returned in 1981 from a journalistic assignment to the South Pole, stopping in New Zealand and then London.  Besides visiting my old home and school, I was determined to find a a quality antique top hat from the early 1900s either on Portobello Road or in one of the many high-quality antique shops nearby.  I stopped in a store that was just an antique haberdashery and talked with the owner.  He steered me to this two-hat collection in an antique box.

I have included photos of the maker of the box, and each hat, as well as the initials of the owner on the box stenciled on the top.  Of course, the most unique thing was the "pop-up" top hat which could be flattened and then, by rapping part of the rim on the hand, would pop out.  Because it was so old, a small portion of pop-up hat fabric had pulled from the brim so I had a haberdasher sew the fabric back on, and he went ahead and reinforced it all the way around.  You can see his careful stitching.  Other age-and-wear-related defects are the minor drawbacks are the missing leather handle, no key for the lock (not necesssary), and the wear on the leather on the back of the box lid, all of which I have photographed here.

There are no hat sizes on these British top hats and if there were, it wouldn't be in inches.  However, both top hats are 6 1/2" wide, and eight inches long.
