THE ITEM DESCRIPTION: The Mickey Mouse Circus pull toy was produced by J. Chein for distribution by the Geo. Borgfeldt company circa 1934 & was designated a NIFTY toy by Borgfeldt meaning they considered it top of the line. NIFTY was Borgfeldt’s brand name for the best toys in their catalog. I am confident that the toy was actually made by J. Chein for Borgfeldt although the toy does not bear the Chein trademark. During the period 1930 to 1934 George Borgfeldt contracted with J. Chein to produce most of the NIFTY toys of comic strip characters that Borgfeldt had licensed. It was in this time frame that Chein produced for Borgfeldt the Mickey sparkler & the Mickey drummer. I also base my conclusion that this is a Chein toy on the fact that it is a platform pulltoy & Chein made a series of other platform pull toys featuring licensed comic strip characters for Borgfeldt in the early 1930s. The only significant difference is that this platform pull toy uses wood figures on a lithographed metal base while the other Chein pull toys featuring Felix, Krazy Kat, Buttercup & Snowflake were made from lithographed tin. I am not aware of any other toy company that made platform pull toys of licensed comic strip characters in the early 1930s.

The platform measures 11” long & 2 3/4” wide. When measured from the outside of the wood wheels the width is 4 1/2”. It is 6” to the top of the Mickey heads. The metal platform has a fantastic lithographed circus scene with Mickey the tiger trainer wearing top hat & holding a whip. Minnie is balancing on a ball while a comical dog with an extremely elongated body stands on 2 separate bases with his body forming a hoop thru which the tiger leaps. 3 of the platform sides have a lithographed circus curtain motif while the 4th side(the front) says MICKEY MOUSE CIRCUS with the Walt Disney copyright & the Geo. Borfeldt NIFTY trade mark. While the heads of the 2 wood Mickey figures are identical the bodies are different. I assume that the 1 in front represents Mickey(red shorts) & the 1 in back is Minnie Mouse(green dress). Both figures have original string tails. The wheels are wood & the toy has the original pull cord. When pulled the wood figures perform acrobatic stunts flipping over the bars. Underneath is the complete bellows mechanism which is designed to make a noise as toy is pulled along. The mechanism is functional but it no longer makes the squeak noise. The toy is in the best condition of any I have ever seen with very little wear on the lithographed platform. Most examples you will find have excessive edge wear all around the 4 sides & across the top & problems with the attachment to the wheels. This example has minimal edge wear & almost no play wear on the top of the platform. The wood figures are in excellent condition. The wood wheels show some wear indicating it was played with but gently. This is an extremely fine example of a very hard to find mechanical Mickey Mouse toy made in the USA in the early 1930s. 122623/11AAJJ(5) I always have lots of vintage 1930s Disneyana for sale on eBay as well as Linemar Disney character toys made in the 1960s.
