THE ITEM DESCRIPTION: The Charlie Chaplin doll was designed & produced by Louis Amberg who became so closely identified with Chaplin that he acquired the nickname Mister Charlie. The Amberg doll company was founded in 1878 & by 1893 was headquartered in NYC. The Louis Amberg cloth label is sewn onto the sleeve of the jacket & names Chaplin as the World’s Greatest Comedian. The Indian head logo of the Essanay Film Co is also on the label & Essanay billed Chaplin as the World’s Greatest Comedian. This makes dating the doll very easy as Chaplin’s tenure at Essanay was short lived including all of 1915 & into 1916. Chaplin made 14 short films for Essanay including the iconic film “The Tramp” in which Chaplin’s film persona was fully developed & he would forever more be known as the Little Tramp. The doll stands 15” tall & has a molded composition head with composition hands. The rest of the doll is straw filled & cloth dressed. Chaplin was my very first area of collecting interest dating back to 1970 when I started collecting movie memorabilia. I always loved this Amberg doll for the realism of the facial expression but until I acquired this example of the doll in 2020 I never own one quite this nice. This is the finest example of the many I have previously owned & the first that I can say has 100% original clothes. I believe this is the first original tie that I have seen. The tie is stitched to the body. The jacket, shirt & pants are original. There are 3 or 4 tiny holes in the black cloth covering his feet. The arms are pinned to the body with a metal disk. Contrary to what you may read online, the doll never came with shoes & never came with a hat. The thing that makes this example of the doll so special is the condition of the molded composition painted head. Condition of the head is near perfect. The paint is flawless, glossy & perfectly applied. I have supplied some closeups so that you can see up the true condition of the head. The doll came to me all the way from Australia & I was stunned when I opened the package & saw my newly acquired, gorgeous Charlie. By far the best example of this rather common doll that I have ever seen & it is well over 100 years old.
