A first edition is the first book printed.

In order to print a book, a printing plate is made. The first printing plate made is called the ``first edition'' (also called the first edition), and the first edition printed for the first time is called the ``first printing'' (first printing). This first edition is called the "first edition".

The number of copies printed using the same first edition increases with each reprint, such as "first edition second printing" and "first edition third printing." Even though these are written as "first editions," they are not considered "first editions" in the used book market. In addition, editions that have been reprinted after correcting typographical errors and other errors are called ``2nd editions'' and ``3rd editions,'' and the numbers increase with each new edition.

So why are first edition books so popular?

When printing a book, if you are a best-selling author, you can predict sales to some extent, but in most cases it is difficult for publishers to predict whether the book will sell or not. Therefore, we do not often print large numbers of copies from the first edition. Especially in the case of new authors, their value is completely unknown, so the number of copies printed is not large. As a result, there are only a small number of them in circulation, giving them a rarity value. Furthermore, in the academic world, the first edition of a work is evaluated not only in Japan but also around the world.

For reprinted or resold works, the author may partially rewrite the content, correct typos, or change the binding. As for the content of the book, the more it has been refined, the more complete it will be.

It will be different from the first time it is released into the world. That's why we view "first editions" as valuable originals.
