Aridities was the name adopted by Royal Italian Army elite special force of World War 1. They mirrored the German stormtroopers tactics of speed and shock. The name Arditi means bold darling and as the name suggests their role required courage and specific combat skills. They role was to breach enemy defences in order to pave the way for a broad infantry assault. The Arditi sparked fear as they would attack a trench armed only with a dagger and hand grenades, with tactics proving successful in the confined space of a trench. A 10th Arditi regiment was formed in 1942 during the Second World War. Arditi units took part in the defeat of France as well as serving in the Alpine Divisions and in the African campaign.
