This is a beautiful antique Victorian gold gilt mourning locket hung on a gold on sterling silver chain. The gold on sterling silver chain measures 17.5 inches long and it is stamped '925' on the secure clasp. The necklace weighs 7.48g. The oval locket measures 2.2cm long and 1.8cm wide. Please note this is not a conventional locket that opens via a clasp but it has a glass back which would have been where the Victorians kept a lock of hair or keepsake from a loved one. It is inlaid with a sky blue enamel front and set with four round creamy seed pearls. There is an embossed engraved pattern of ornate scroll shapes running around the edge of the piece and around the glass at the back. Please note, due to its age, this is an unmarked piece. Mourning jewellery represents a connection to a deceased love one and often contained space for a tribute to the subject, such as their initials, lock of hair etc. This antique piece is a lovely example in excellent condition and would look great worn alone or worn with other pendants.
