Uvae Ursi - Dried Leaf
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is a plant species of the genus Arctostaphylos (manzanita). Its common names include kinnikinnick and pinemat manzanita, and it is one of several related species referred to as bearberry.
Description: It is an evergreen shrub with creeping twigs, 20-50 cm long, with small ovate leaves, 1-7 cm long with spiral zigzagging. The leaves are placed on short handles spirally on the loins. In color above they are darker, and below are light green, to taste - astringent to slightly bitter.
The leaves of the blade contain the phenolic glycosides arbutin and methylarbuthine, tanning substances, ursolic acid and flavonoids.
The flowers are in the shape of a bell, white or pale pink, on grapes of 2-20 colors, blooming in May-June. They give small spherical red fruits with six seeds. They ripen in the late summer or autumn.
Action: The main action of the blade is uro-antiseptic, due to the content of arbutin and methylarbuthine. There is also little diuretic action. It is used in cases of chronic cystitis and pyelitis.
Preparation: Tea is prepared by pouring 1 tablespoon of the drug into 500ml of cold water, allowing to soak 8-12hrs and boiling for 5 minutes. After squeezing another 20 minutes, strain and drink 4 -5 daytime intervals. It must be taken for at least a few months to feel its uro-antiseptic effect.
Applications: disorders of the secretory system associated with inflammatory processes of the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract (urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis and combined diseases such as pyelonephritis, cystopilitis and cystopylolephritis, acute and chronic glomerulonephritis, and nephrolithiasis).
Directions for use: in the form of a decoction - 1 teaspoonfuls put in 150ml of boiling water, boil for 15 minutes and leave for another 20 minutes. Drink 150ml 3-4 times a day before eating.
