X. preissii - Balga Grass Tree

The Grass-tree is an iconic Australian plant.

It is the most commonly seen species which can grow to several metres tall and is

often branched.

In certain Aboriginal languages, it is called 'Bukkup' or 'Kawee'.

The flowers appear on a spear-like spike which can grow up to 2 m tall.

Old leaves hang down forming a distinctive skirt that partly covers the trunk.

An easy to grow, medium to large shrub.

Flowers

White flowers from July to December, but younger plants may flower in June.

Spikes are fairly prominently displayed emerging from the foliage.

Bush tucker

The flower spikes are a rich source of nectar.

Indigenous people's used these flowers by immersing them in water.

The nectar mixed freely with the water and resulted in a sweet drink.

Other uses

An excellent low maintenance, feature plant, with showy flowers.

Foliage is used as a filler in cut flower arrangements.
