THE FIRST THREE PARTS OF THIS HIGHLY COLLECTABLES SERIES OF HUMOROUS COLOUR PLATES SHOWING THE MISHAPS OF STUDDY AND OTHER PUPS -

STUDDY (George Ernest, a British artist best remembered for his creation of Bonzo the dog, a fictional acter in the early 1920s that first appeared in The Sketch Magazine, 1878-1948).

The Studdy Dogs Portfolio [WITH] The Second Studdy Dogs Portfolio [WITH] The Bonzo Book being the Third Studdy Dogs Portolio [3 books sold together].

(London): The Sketch, n.d. but circa 1922. Three separate volumes. Printed green ribbon-bound thin card wraps with colour illustration pasted on front cover of each volume. 47 full-page colour plates in total (45 full-page colour plates, and two full-page title pages which count as plates but do not appear in the plate list). Title page, with list of plates at front of each volume. The first volume contains a plain title/contents page followed by 15 full page plates (as stated on the cover). The second and third volumes both state 16 plates, so we presume the colour illustrated title / contents list at the front of each of these volumes is included as one of the plates, followed by 15 full-page plates. They have all been collated and are complete, with all plates called-for on the title pages present and correct. Size: 4to - 35cm x 27cm.

Good to Very Good condition. The bindings are somewhat frayed, with wear to the spines of each volume. Creasing to edges, and a few small nicks. However, they are all intact (uncommon for these volumes, which have often fallen apart, with loose pages). The plates are generally clean and bright, with just the occasional handling mark or small blemish. The rear of several plates with some minor off-setting and smudging from the inks on the facing plate. There is some light curvature to the covers and pages. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.

On offer here are the first three volumes from the Studdy Dogs series, containing full page colour plates by George E. Studdy. The 47 colour plates are made up of 45 stand-alone full-page illustrations and 2 full-page plates as title pages (the title page in the first volume is plain and not counted as a plate). The hilarious illustrations show the mishaps of a pup called Studdy and some of his canine friends.
