This is an antique 19th century Aesthetic Movement Hudson River style gold frame.

I would estimate it dates circa 1890s.

The overall frame measures 20 3/4 inches x 28 3/4 inches (52.7 cm x 73 cm). The back open size measures 14 1/4 inches x 22 1/8 inches (36.2 cm x 56.2 cm). The molding width measures 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm).

The frame is made of wood. Parts of it are lemon gold gilt, such as the sight edge and one of the flat strips going around. The rest of it is probably painted gold.

The frame has damage. There are a few chips going around the exterior. The floral decoration, which is applied decorative composition, has worn off in some areas and is showing the gray bole color that was placed beneath the gold paint. This is more pronounced in some parts of the frame than others. There is a hole on one of the short pieces of molding which looks like it was caused when someone put an eye screw in too deep. There is another smaller one just above that.

There are some other scattered nicks, dings and wear to the surface where you can see the white gesso below showing through.

When you are standing up close to this frame, you can see its problems. But when you are standing a little ways back, they tend to just blend in with the overall look of the frame.

There is no glass.

It weighs 5 pounds 14 1/2 ounces (2.682 kg).

It has what I always look for in frames, that wonderful old world look!
