This is Vintage 1978 TIME MAGAZINE with JIM JONES & JONESTOWN on COVER.

James Warren Jones (May 13, 1931 – November 18, 1978), better known as Jim Jones, was an American preacher who led the Peoples Temple between 1955 and 1978.

In what he called "revolutionary suicide", Jones and the members of his inner circle orchestrated a mass murder-suicide in his remote jungle commune at Jonestown, Guyana, on November 18, 1978.

Jones and the events that occurred at Jonestown have had a defining influence on society's perception of cults.

The supporters of Peoples Temple, especially politicians, had a difficult time explaining their connections to Jones following the deaths.

After a period of reflection, some admitted they had been tricked by Jones.

President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter sought to minimize their connections to Jones.

San Francisco Mayor George Moscone said he vomited when he heard of the massacre, and called the friends and families of many of the victims to apologize and offer his sympathies.
