Corinthian were always very aware of the importance of getting their product into new and emerging markets, and there was no larger emerging market than the collectors market in Japan.

Capitalising on World Cup fever, given how the 2002 World Cup was being jointly hosted in Asia by Japan and South Korea, Corinthian joined forces with soft drink giant Coca Cola to produce and release a set of 20 MicroStars figures, however in Japan the brand name was called Miniatures.

The 20 players chosen are all top international stars, being painted in their respective home club kits, the exception being Shinji Ono who was painted into a very special Coca Cola branded kit!

All figures were released on a Red base and had their own unique collector codes, starting with CCWC (Coca Cola World Cup) the figures did not have the player ratings under the base.

As for distribution they were released exclusively in Japan as a sealed sachet product, with the sachet being placed around the neck of Coca Cola bottles, with each sachet containing one randomly packed figure and a collectors leaflet detailing the range.

A special limited edition box set was also produced, which contains all 20 figures, with the box set again being distributed in Japan. As ever, Corinthian did their best to ensure collectors in the UK were able to obtain these overseas releases, this box set was no exception.

Corinthian ran a promotion starting on August 5th 2002 which enabled collector club members to receive a box set absolutely free for spending £100 at the Memorabilia 2002 show and orders placed via their online store, the promotion ran for as long as Corinthian had stock available.

A superb set of figures and one that is readily available on the secondary market and certainly worth adding to your MicroStars collection.
