A guaranteed authentic and rare antique Japanese one mon bronze coin minted in Tokyo around 1850.  One of the more unique and large Japanese antique (c.1835) coins. This is the 100 mon bronze Tempo coin. It is in the traditional "cash coin" style featuring an oval coin with a square center hole. The oval is said to represent heaven, while the square represents the earth, thus the coin is a perfect combination of heaven and earth. It has the mint mark on the side (see pictures 4 & 5) used to assure a genuine coin. On one side in Japanese: "Tempo Tsuka" and on the reverse is the Japanese word for 100 mon. One of the largest Japanese coins, it measures 2" long by 1 1/2" wide (5 x 4 cm). Showing very little wear, this coin is in fine condition

Note the bamboo impression on both sides of this coin (see pictures 3 & 4).  This was an early method to prevent counterfitting of this valuable coin and an assurance of authenticity.
