Early 1900's Signed Hand Colored Photograph "A Welcome Guest"

  • For your consideration is an American hand-colored photograph from the early 1900’s
  • Similar to the style of Wallace Nutting, Fred Thompson or Charles Sawyer, the print is tastefully colored and then mounted within a platemark indentation on a typical off-white mat. The title is hand written lower left beneath the image: "A Welcome Guest"
  • It is signed lower right, but the signature is a little difficult to discern, possibly Fred Thompson
  • Very popular in the early 1900's, the hand tinted photo prints were a beautiful combination of two forms of art.
  • Many skilled colorists were quite literally blurring the lines between photography and painting.
  • Besides colored portraits and family photos, tinted outdoor sceneries and landscapes and interior scenes became art pieces of a kind, increasingly sought after by collectors
  • The presented here image depicts a well composed scene featuring a young girl in white dress meeting at her doorstep a welcome guest, a woman in fancy period attire
  • A stamp on the back adds to its provenance, as possibly being sold at some point by Cara Antiques, with address 124 South Street, Concord N. H
