Pair of 19th C. Sarreguemines French Majolica Fruit Plates w. Quinces / Apples

  • For your consideration is a pair of lovely French majolica plates
  • Characteristic green / beige color glaze, one slightly darker then the other
  • Decoration in relief, featuring a pair of large fruits in the center, quinces or apples, surrounded by border of leaves
  • Incised underglaze marks at the bases "Sarreguemines" and a number 227 C, possibly for the pattern
  • The Sarreguemines pottery was established about 1784. After a period of struggle, in1800, the business expanded and prospered. The Sarreguemines factory produced most of the original tiles used during the construction of the Paris metro. Majolica was added to its production in the 1860's. The factory ceased production in 2007.
  • Circa 1860-1900, France

  • Measurements: Approximately 7 5/8" diameter (across) x 0.75"
  • The pair weighs about 1 lb. 8 oz.

  • Condition: Good overall. Please see photos. Signs of wear commensurate with age and use. A minor glaze flake on the underside rim of one of the plates, a larger one at the edge of the other, both as pictured. All original
