This RARE card was issued by the KINNEY BROS Tobacco Co. as an insert premium in their brands of Tobacco and Cigarettes during 1880. It is one from a fairly RARE series of 25 cards entitled,  “ FAMOUS AMERICAN RUNNING HORSES  ”  and is designated as N229 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue  . The front of the card features an image of the Horse and Rider and list recent races won by the pair. There are two different variations of the backs of this series.  One variation features an advertisement for Kinney Tobacco and explains how to send away for a Large Size Premium Card from the company.  The other variation has advertising for Kinney and features a Checklist of all the cards in the N229 American Racehorse Series and the N230 English Racehorse Series. The lithography for these cards is excellent.  Although the Lithographer for these cards is not listed, they do have a very similar look to the Currier and Ives Racehorse Litho’s.  This card features the Thoroughbred TROUBADOUR  who was the winner of THE SUBURBAN 1886  and was ridden by the jockey W.J. FITZPATRICK, and is the List Back Variant ..

The card measures 2  3/4  inches by 1 3/8 approximately. The card is free from creases and has relatively nice corners.  I have scanned the card fairly large for you to be able to judge condition for your self.   Cards from this series are a fantastic cross over collectable.  They are a who’s who of the fastest and most famous horses from what is essentially the start of American Horseracing history.  This would also make a fantastic and rare display piece that would make an unforgettable gift for any Thoroughbred Breeder,  Owner or Enthusiast  Don't miss out on this over 130  year old piece (a true America antique).  Where else can you get such a beautiful Victorian HORSERACING  Lithograph of this age and quality,  this inexpensiveI  will be trying to list several  EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities and Circus themes.  To view the other cards I have up on ebay please click  on the “View Sellers other Items” Icon located on this page.
