What is the thermo-acoustic engine?

Different with the traditional external heat stirling engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air create different temperature levels to generate a mechanical work, the thermo-acoustic engine includes two part: Thermo-acoustic engine and Thermo-acoustic refrigerator (cold part); high amplitude acoustic standing waves create pressure and expansion analogous to a stirling power piston, while out of phase acoustic traveling waves generate displacement along a temperature gradient, analogous to a stirling displacer piston
