THIS GREAT PIECE OF HEARTH-WARE JUST CAME OUT OF AN OLD COLLECTION DOWN IN NEW YORK.
IT WAS PURCHASED OVER 50 YEARS AGO FROM A VERY IMPORTANT NEW YORK CITY ANTIQUE DEALER.
AN EXTREMELY RARE AND UNUSUAL FORM, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST OF ITS KIND AND IT IS IN NEARLY PERFECT ORIGINAL CONDITION.
THIS PIECE IS A MUST HAVE FOR THE COLLECTOR OF EARLY IRION OR HEARTHWARE.
A MUSEUM QUALITY EARLY 18TH CENTURY "FORMAL" WROUGHT IRON "BIRD OR FOWL ROASTING" FORK.
PROBABLY NEW ENGLAND OR NEW YORK, CIRCA 1730-1760.
THIS GREAT PIECE IS WHITE SMITH MADE, PROBABLY BY A GUNSMITH OR A VERY TALENTED BLACKSMITH.
A VERY RARE FORM, IT HAS A LONG HANDLE WITH A ROUND HANGING END. THE HANDLE HAS THREE DECORATED DESIGN ELEMENTS.
IT ENDS WITH A REVOLVING TWO TINE CURVED END HOLDER THAT HAS A CROWN STYLE TOP AND A RARE DESIGNED BODY.
THE ENTIRE PIECE IN AN OLD GRUNGY POLISHED SURFACE AND PATINA.
NO REPAIRS OR RESTORATIONS, THE PIECE IS PERFECT AND ALL INTACT.
THIS PIECE WOULD HAVE BEEN USED IN A FORMAL PARLOR, PROBABLY AT A PARTY OR GATHERING TO ROAST YOUR FOWL RATHER THAN THE WROUGHT IRON ONES THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN USED IN THE COOKING HEARTH.
THIS WOULD HAVE ONLY HELD AND ROASTED ONE BIRD, PROBABLY A DOVE OR QUAIL.
THIS IS A VERY RARE PIECE TO HAVE SURVIVED.
THE PIECE IS IN WONDERFUL ORIGINAL CONDITION WITH NO LOSSES OR REPAIRS EXCEPT FOR THE USUAL WEAR AND TEAR.
It is 23" long and the end stands 8" tall.
