The Sappers of the French Hussars were soldiers who also dug trenches to allow forces to advance towards the enemy under the shelter of the trench walls. The Sappers also built dug out forts. In the French Army digging a trench while returning musket fire on the enemy was known as “driving a sap” and the men who did this were known as “sapeurs”.
