Vintage
"G. T. Bayley"
"The Popular"
1/2 Plate

Camera.

This "G. T. Bayley" "The Popular" field camera is in "as found" condition.
The camera has two applied plaques, on to the side with the makers/retailers and model details and one to the front with the "Bayley's" address
.
There are no holes or splits to the tapered black leather bellows, however, there are marks, scuffs and a little fading to the folds and corners.
The ground glass plate to the back of the camera has no cracks or chips, it measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches, I believe this is 1/2 plate size.
The leather handle on top of the camera is sturdy and well attached.

The two uprights which hold the lens board in place have been repaired at some point, but they doe feel strong and sturdy.
There are no other splits or cracks to the mahogany that I can find and the wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina, however, there are the marks, scuffs and scratches that you associate with a used camera of this age.
All of the brass work appears to be present and is working order and it has retained much of its' original lacquering, but there is some loss of finish and tarnishing in places.
It is fitted with an unnamed shutter, this appears to be stuck.
The brass lens is unmarked. The glass elements are free from chips or cracks, but they do have smear and dirt marks and the diaphragm fins move smoothly.
The front rim has a dent.

The front of the camera extends as it should and folds away fine, I have tried to show this in the photographs.
