This is an antique or vintage Chinese or possibly Japanese hand carved wood base. It could be used for a lamp, vase, bowl or statue.

I am uncertain as to exactly how old it is, but it looks like it has very good age. Please use your judgment.

Overall, it measures 2 inches tall (5.1 cm) and is 4 3/8 inches wide in one direction and 4 5/8 inches wide in the other direction (11.1 cm, 11.7 cm). The space your object would sit in is not round or square, but curved. From corner to corner inside, it measures 4 inches across (10.1 cm). From side to side inside, it measures 3 1/2 inches across in one direction and 3 5/8 inches across in the other direction (8.9 cm, 9.2 cm).

The piece is beautifully carved and has a warm dark color.

The top has wear to the finish. Most of this will not show when your piece is sitting in it. There are a couple of tiny age related hairline cracks on a piece of the decoration on one side, which you can see in the photos. There is some other light scattered wear to the surface, but most of this tends to just blend in with the overall look of the piece.
