This is a miniature Vejigante mask from Puerto Rico that (in life-size) are worn at Carnival with elaborate, colorful costumes. The 4 long projections are HORNS. Though similar to the many various types from Mexico, these are quite distinctly Puerto Rican. Search vejigante to see these in real life use through photos. The face of the mask is 3" x 5.5". And from the farthest point of the horns, both side-to-side and top-to-bottom is 13".

I had a very good friend who I knew for a very long time who collected masksand I have ended up with all his vintage decorative masks from other countries (Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, Nepal, South Africa, Indonesia, and countries I haven’t identified yet). There are about 50 of these masks. I am selling them for my friend’s estate. They are so stinkin’ excellent, but I am having a really hard time researching them. I think it’s because all ceremonial and tribal masks are hand-made, hand-painted and hand-carved. They’re all One Of A Kind! I found out about this one from a helpful eBayer.

This mask measures 13" x 13" x 6"  Late 20th century, or more likely, early 21st century.
