This is an antique early 20th century ornate gold frame.

I must say I’ve never seen a frame like this before and I am stumped as to its age. The nails are telling me it’s from the early 20th century though. Please use your judgment.

The overall frame measures 8 1/2 inches x 11 inches (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm). The back opening size measures 7 3/8 inches x 10 inches (18.7 cm x 25.4 cm). The molding width measures 3/4 inch (1.9 cm).

For some reason I feel like this frame is Germany or northern Europe. It is made of wood which is covered in a very highly detailed applied decorative composition. It has a beautiful shade of gold which even looks like gold gilt, though I don’t think it is.

The sides are actually a mustard yellow color. It has a very thin rabbet depth, so you would probably have to use offset clips. It varies between about 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch (.3 cm - .6 cm).

The frame is oh so slightly curved on one side, as one of the short pieces of molding curves upward at each corner a little. There are little chips to the composition in three of the four corners. There are a few other scattered nicks to the surface.

There is just something very unique about this frame even though I can’t quite put my finger on it. The decoration and color are just beautiful, as is the patina.

There is no glass.

It weighs a little under 4 ounces (106 g).

It has what I always look for in frames, that wonderful old world look!
