Philip Guston (real name: Philip Goldstein) was a Canadian-born American painter, printmaker, muralist, and drawing artist. Guston worked in a variety of artistic modes, from Renaissance-inspired figuration to formally accomplished abstraction. He is now considered by New York magazine's critics to be "one of the most important, powerful, and influential American painters of the past 100 years."
