Ames Anciennes

Fine antique French 18th century violin made circa 1775.

Fine French 18th century violin made by Jean-Baptiste Lemarquis in Mirecourt. The violin shows on the back under the button the original fire brand of the maker, "Le Marquis de l'air d'oiseaux". His brand was purchased after his death by Charles Claudot, and afterwards by the Laberte workshops, until the first part of 20th century. Original Lemarquis violins are always interesting French instruments, not very far in style than the ones made by Nicolas Chappuy in Mirecourt at the same time.

The top is made of two parts of spruce, and shows grain lines widening towards the edges. The back is made of a two parts of faintly flamed maple. The ribs are of the same wood. The neck and head are original.

The violin shows different repairs on the top including a bass bar one very well made. There are no soundpost cracks. Some quick edge repairs could be made better, but the violin is fully playable.

The instrument is guaranteed 100% original and authentic. We can issue a certificate on demand after the sale including pictures for a little price.

The instrument comes with an old case, and two old bows.

Body length : 360 mm.

The sound is mature, deep and dark. We set the auction price at $1.00. Don't miss this chance to buy an authentic 18th century French violin.
