KING OLIVER AND HIS ORCHESTRA had a big hit with this 1930 Victor record - "ST. JAMES INFIRMARY." You hear actually very little of Oliver - instead, trumpeter BUBBER MILEY dominates for fully half the record, with his trademark plunger-and-pixie mute. He fiercely solos in the opening chorus, then he equally fiercely responds to FRANKIE MARVIN'S vocal in the second chorus. Poor King Oliver must have been having gum trouble on this session! The flip side is "WHEN YOU'RE SMILING," a huge hit song for everyone who recorded it that year.
This original 1930 "Scroll" Victor 22298 is in lovely EE- condition. Very clean with slight signs of wear.
