This tobacco card
was put out by the Aug. Beck Tobacco Company of Chicago as a premium in
their Yum Yum Brand of Tobacco and
Cigarettes during 1893 This is one of Ten Sports Cards in this series that are
known. This Card is RARE!!! None of the Price Guides and Reference books that
I am aware of had one available to be able to show a picture of one. That includes Price Guide to Golf Tobacco
Cards (Smedley Bedrock), The World Index (British Cartophilic Society) and the
American Card Catalogue (Burdicks). The
card measures 2 ¾ inches by 1 13/16
inches approximately. The Card is printed on Thin Stock paper. The card does have some creasing near the
bottom of the front, and some touches to
the corners. It has survived well over
the 130 years it has been around. I have
scanned the card front and back fairly large for you to be able to judge condition
for yourself . Finding one of these
cards in any condition is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The rarity is
probably due in part to the exchange offer on the back of the card. The company made prizes available in exchange
for certain amounts of cards. I imagine many cards were sent into the company
in exchange for those prizes. They
rarely come on the market for sale. Once
this goes into someone’s golf collection I doubt it will ever come back on the market. This is arguably one of the rarest American
Golf cards.
I will be
trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few
days (spread
across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in
any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Cigarettes , Caramel, Candy,
Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such
diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts,
Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges
and Universities, Dog Breeds, Circus
themes and many more. To view the other cards I have up on ebay please
