Vintage Chinese Carved and Incised Soapstone Seal and Ink Box - Dragon - Includes Fitted Box

Being offered is a vintage Chinese carved and incised soapstone seal with a soapstone ink box. The seal is carved on the top with the image of a dragon and all four sides have incised landscape images. The front side of the seal has an incised Chinese character mark inside a shaded circle with four lines of calligraphy underneath. We think this translates to ‘Auspicious Day’ or something similar. Below this are four lines of poetry which we believe relates to the incised landscapes around the seal. The seal has been cut on the bottom with additional Chinese characters which was printed using the red ink seal paste from the jar (see photographs). We believe is the former owner’s name, but we are not able to translate it. The red ink paste jar has a single incised character mark on top of its lid. We believe it translates to ‘Longevity’ or ‘Life’. The lid fits nicely and keeps the ink from drying out. This is a really nice looking set and would make a great addition to any collection of carved Chinese seals.

Measurements: The carved dragon seal stands approximately 3-3/8” in height. It measures approximately 1” wide x 1” deep. The round ink box measures approximately 2” across in diameter and stands approximately ¾” in height. The fitted box which holds both seal and ink jar measures approximately 1-1/2” in height and measures 5” wide x 5” deep. The boxed set weighs approximately 13 ounces. All measurements are approximate, but close.

Condition: We carefully examined the carved seal and ink jar. NO Chips, Cracks, Nicks or damage were noted. There are some reddish color stains on the jar and around the seal from previous use. This is not distracting, but mentioned for accuracy. The fitted box has some light stains around the sides, but is still in very good condition otherwise.
