This sterling silver
spoon dating back to years around 1900 from Los Angeles California is very ornate and full of very detailed images.
At the top of handle, the territorial seal Seated Minerva, the Roman goddess of
wisdom, overlooks the Sacramento River scene with ships and boats, Sierra
Nevada Mountains in the background and grizzly bear in front. Above is the word
EUREKA (Greek for "I have found it") refers to the discovery of gold
(also the state motto). Next poppy flowers, then MISSION DOLORES, below miner’s
pan with gold nuggets and year 1849, year 1849 was the year when gold was
discovered in California, below crossed pick and shovel and beautiful giant
redwood w/ a tunnel through it down the handle (tree was called Wawona). In the
bowl it has embossed very detailed image of Spanish style building, the
writing is OLD MISSION, LOS ANGELES, CAL.
On the reverse of handle: STATE CAPITOL, leaves, grapes and oranges. All that
on a handle!!! Measures 5-1/2 inches (137 mm) long. This is one very busy spoon
and in excellent condition. On the back marked STERLING along with Watson &
Newell Co. markings (crown W lion).
